About

We created Dhammastudies because we wanted to help people who already have an established practice but feel that they have reached a plateau. This may be due to a lack of familiarity with the actual words of the Buddha. By investigating the early Buddhist texts, it is possible to start questioning one’s own understanding of what ‘practice’ means. Our aim is to provide the tools and guidance needed to engage deeply with the Buddha’s teachings.

Rather than trying to avoid thinking about the burden of existence by focusing on and trying to become absorbed in a meditation object, we believe that some thinking is required in order to understand the Dhamma properly. But the thinking that is required is a special kind of thinking that is:

  1. reflexive, not objective
  2. descriptive, not explanatory
  3. concerned with the structure of experience, not with specific objects

This phenomenological approach allows us to uncover the meaning of the core teachings in the Pāli Suttas. Drawing on years of practice and study, our teachers have designed a course that bridges gaps often felt by students of the Dhamma. Alongside careful study, you will have the opportunity to share and refine your own understanding in open discussion, making the texts meaningful in the context of your own experience.
